Always Look on the Bright Side of Life (practice recording)
Practice recording on my Yamaha P45 plastic piano. It's a little bit rough as I've just got a chord chart to go off, though I was playing better before I started recording (that's always the way).

Performed at Local Vocals open mike night in Hope's Cafe on 14 June 2024. During their halfway break I asked the ladies to see if they'd like to do some songs I brought in, and they had a bit of a sing around my piano to see if they could do them, and to pick a key. And we had a bit of help from Mike on his guitar, and George on his cahon. 1. The Letter (by the Box Tops) sung by Devi and Eric. ...

Victoria Bitter tells me that it's traditional to never do this song the same way twice, every performance is different. I think I can fit in with that.

It took a couple of minutes to get started, the app was sitting there spinning it wheels apparently not doing anything. Pity it distorted the sound, there's no clue it was doing that, and no controls to adjust things. My other clips are recorded using the same phone camera, and they work fine.

A favourite of mine that went through some impromptu arrangement. I learnt it in two keys because we weren't sure who would be singing. During my practice before the show Victoria Bitter came over and started singing some of it, so I invited her to join in. Then looking at the score, which has two verses and choruses with exactly the same words decided we'd have our singers do a verse each, the bridge together, the duplicate sections as an instrumental, and the outro together. I loved how that went, it was just a shame the vocal mike wasn't up at the start of the song. Then, while sitting in the audience waiting our turn, I gave my chord chart a closer look and realised it wasn't the same as my score, so I hurriedly red-penned in some corrections just moments before we went on, so I didn't lead the guitarists astray, and that's the chart Big End was following - sight-reading it live.

Are you lonesome tonight? Can I give you a fright? Vincent Price is on the tv... Sit upon my settee Watch a scary movie No-one near us to hear---- you scream The popcorn is popping The ropes are uncoiled The rack is propped open The cauldron has boiled Is your heart filled with pain? Shall I do it again? Tell me, dear, are you lonesome tonight?

Hi Music lovers...I tried to sing the phrasing like Ray Charles version since he WAS the best singer of the 20th century..in my humble opinion. But I aint Ray Charles and this peformance was totally unrehearsed (obviously haha)..most covers are John Denver style...boring....I welcome feedback.WoMBaT

I used to play this on the piano in a special school 30+ years ago (where I learnt to play piano instead of the organ, doing all the playschool songs for sing-a-longs). One of the lads loved Kermit the frog, he'd madly rifle through the pages in a music book and put this on the piano. Sometimes I'd make him play the bassline (some of the kids would get a bit overexcited and come up and bash on the keys while you're playing, my solution to that was grab their hand and guide their finger onto playing the right notes for a few bars). One day I was playing this he popped up and played the right notes at the right time. I haven't played this for ages, don't have that music book any more, and it was in a horrible key with several flats.

Trying something I find very hard to do: playing along to a recording of myself. Made all the harder by there being a few half-bar mess-ups during my first recording I'm playing along to. Usually, I play this on the organ (same score) all in one go. I'll do that later, it's after 2 am, now.

In 2 keys because trying to play its melody in E flat twists my fingers in knots, and Dixie didn't want to learn it in another key, so we threw in a key change. I'm not playing in the first half, at all. You can see me silently following along the keys to keep in-step for the keychange in the middle. I forewarned our sound guy I wasn't playing until after the keychange, hopefully I didn't confuse him. I used to like swapping between different musicians playing lead in the past, it's been a while since I've been able to arrange to do that again.

I should have picked an easier song, and might have done if I'd thought for a few more seconds! I didn't have the lyrics properly in my head (verses are easy to get mixed up; I originally learnt from a shorter version) and had a sore throat. I love this song and like to do it justice. I sang it better at the Hoot last month.

I asked some of the ladies to pick a song out of my Beatles book to do at the previous local vocals night, and they picked one I didn't know "Honey Pie." So had to learn it. I discovered my book had an incomplete version of it, so this is my attempt. We're all sight-reading it, figuring it out on the fly, and having a whale of a time. And I decided to throw in Hey Jude as a second everyone sing-a-long choice. I really was all thumbs that night. The camera was plonked down before we started, not knowing where people would stand (about 4 of them to my right, nobody near the mikes, and about another 8 sitting down in the other side of the room), so I filled in the gap with the scores I'm reading.

Thanks. If I'm not playing from memory I'm reading the score in spirals. Read the chords I have to play, then quickly look at the notes, then read the lyrics to keep track of where I am and try to play the notes to fit the lyrics, figure out what bass I'm going to play to the chords (it's part rhythm and part counter-melody), the left hand is mostly playing chords on auto-pilot on the organ, on the piano its doing gymnastics.
